Father of John, Joseph, Nicholas, and Thomas Holt

What was the relationship between John and Joseph Holt who married sisters Helena Maria and Edith White? Three Louisa County deeds help to steer us to the answer.  The three deeds include:

July 8, 1758 Louisa County VA DB B page 333-334 Joseph Holt of New Kent County and Joseph Holt Jr. of Louisa County VA..."give a negro girl named Fanny and all her increase"...witnessed by John Holt and Elisha White  (The witnesses to this deed tell us that the Joseph Holt we've been following in Louisa County is also known as Joseph Holt Jr. The question is, who was Joseph Holt of New Kent County?) 

September 25, 1759 Louisa County VA DB B page 333-334 Joseph Holt Sr. of New Kent County and Nicholas Holt of Charles City Co., "for love and affection... 400 acres in Louisa County on both sides of Treasurer’s Run" (Joseph Holt Sr. appears to be the same Joseph Holt of New Kent County in the previous deed. But who was Nicholas Holt?) 

March 26, 1762 Louisa County VA DB C page 111-112 Joseph Holt Sr. of Charles City County and John Richmond of New Kent County ... "400 acres in Louisa County on both sides of Treasurer’s Run". (This deed tells us that Joseph Holt Sr. moved from New Kent to Charles City County. It appears that Joseph Holt Sr. sold to John Richmond the same 400 acres on Treasurer's Run that were mentioned in the above 1759 Louisa County deed between Joseph Holt Sr. and Nicholas)

So, what was the relationship between Joseph Holt Sr. of New Kent and Charles City Counties and Joseph and John Holt of Louisa County? The answer lies in the below 1765 Charles City County will of Joseph Holt which was proven in Charles City County court, June 1772:

Joseph stated in his will that he had four sons; John, Joseph, Nicholas and Thomas. All but Thomas were mentioned in the above Louisa County deeds. And notice that the latest Louisa County deed was written in 1762, three years before the writing of Joseph's will.  Perhaps Joseph knew he was ill and had begun dividing up his estate to his sons. 

The above will does confirmed that John and Joseph Holt of Louisa County were brothers. Unfortunately, it appears Joseph Holt Sr.'s wife was deceased by the time that he wrote his will in 1765. So, we learn nothing of their mother from this document. But now for the question, who were the parents of Joseph Holt Sr.?

The Anderson Land Patent for Goldmine The Andersons are one of those prolific families of which you'll find connections to in just about every other family in early Hanover County. They also owned land all over Hanover County, within both St. Paul's and St. Martin's Parishes. One particular location in which they lived, and are probably most known for, is the Anderson plantation located at Goldmine Creek. In fact, back in 1913 Edward Lowell Anderson published a book entitled The Andersons of Gold Mine, Hanover County, Virginia. The Stone Family's Connections to David and Mary White

Although the Stone family had a surprising connection to the Barrett White estate , another piece of Stone/White wonder was uncovered with a little more record digging. While searching for deeds involving the Stone family in Henrico County, the below record surfaced.  In 1771, Thomas Stone (brother to William Stone) purchased 65 acres in Henrico County from John Robinson of Orange County, North Carolina.  According to the below deed, John Robinson was the son of Thomas Robinson, and the description of the land included mention of a creek and branches, but unfortunately, the name of the creek and branches were not provided.  However, previously, we learned that part of Thomas Stone's land included 100 acres on Gilleys Creek .  So, it is very possible that the 65 acres mentioned in the below deed were also in the same area.  The Robinson to Stone deed begins halfway down the page. John Barnet or John Burnet?

FamilySearch.com never ceases to amaze me! Today, from the comfort of my own home, I came across the original pages that were transcribed by C. G. Chamberlayne for his publication  Vestry Book of  St. Paul's Parish Hanover County Virginia 1706-1786 ! Thank you FamilySearch.com! In a previous entry, I noted how many Burnett researchers have ignored Chamberlayne's transcription of Precinct 27 in 1708. In his transcription, Chamberlayne listed a John BARNET and an Edwd BURNET within the same precinct. Unfortunately, Chamberlayne's meticulous transcription effort has been ignored for this precinct and some Burnett researchers decided that a transcription mistake was made and that the transcription for "John BARNET" should have read, "John BURNET".
